Time attack and drifting are the only words some of us need to hear to charge our batteries, jump in our cars, and speed off to the track. It’s not every day that two of our favorite forms of motorsports combine forces in the same location for one day, but that’s exactly what Turbo By Garrett did this past weekend with Global Time Attack, Just Drift, and Drift 101, taking over Willow Springs International Raceway for an event known as Boostfest.
My goal was to show up to Boostfest to hang with friends, shoot some photos, have a couple of beers, and have a good time… which DID happen, but I was pretty intrigued with the action going down on the Streets of Willow track with Global Time Attack. As one of the attractions of Boostfest, the first round of the 2017 GTA Pro-Am series was in full effect with cars going full hot througout the day.
40 something drivers and their cars registered to beat the clock. There were some pretty smoking times coming in halfway through the day, but all I could think about is how I once again failed to register myself in Enthusiast FWD with only TWO drivers as my would-have-been rivals. This happened to me only months ago at Super Lap Battle, so a little of my day was filled with jealousy when I would glance towards the Streets of Willow circuit. I really love some grip driving!
Horsethief Mile was alive with the sound of tires dying while Just Drift, our local Formula Drift Pro-Am series, hosted their first event of 2017 with about 27 drivers. The season opener is always open drift, and many drivers who don’t drive the entire season often make it a point to attend. It’s also pretty rad when the pros show up with previous year FD pro cars to shred with the regular dudes.
I’m not going to hide the fact that drifting is my number one motorsport love, so I spent most my day up on the hill with Just Drift watching these guys do their thing.
I can’t even think about how many years I’ve spent in this exact location, but the view never gets old.
Brad Deberti was out shredding in one of Vaughn Gittin Jr.’s previously owned Mustangs. Brad is a professional offroad driver that recently got into drifting, and it’s looking pretty good for him judging off his driving!
If spectating time attack or drifting was getting you in the mood to drive, Drift 101 was in attendance up at Balcony circuit holding classes with highly experienced instructors such as our friend Jeff Jones.
For chump change, you too could learn how to slide and control an S-chassis or 350z. The day was pretty busy for our Drift 101 friends, giving lessons to about 20 drivers. Hopefully, some of them enjoy it enough to come back and do it again!
Boostfest was a great time to catch up with familiar faces.
Our bud Dai Yoshihara was out with his FD team and the Turn14 Distribution Formula Drift BRz car, and also Spoon Sports and the time attack Civic doing some testing and taking advantage of photo ops throughout the day.
Dai and crew created quite the media frenzy any time the cars would hit the track.
Both of these well-renowned cars have a large following, so it’s pretty epic to see them both on track at the same time.
An unexpected surprise came in the form of an Australian drifter named Josh Robinson, here to test his skills against Formula Drift Pro 2’s best drivers this year. Not only was it my first time meeting Josh, it was also my first time seeing a purpose built Holden drift car. Call me a newb to anything foreign, but still pretty sweet.
We also got up close and personal with the car in action, provided by Boostfest.
Time attack was still going strong. Markos Mylonas piloting this pink wheeled subie clicked off a 1:20.637, which resulted in a new record in Street AWD.
Dai Yoshihara and Alex Heilbrunn had some fun up on the hill with Just Drift.
Some of that Spoon Sports Civic goodness. Did you know that this chassis is modified to sit the driver right in the center of the car? Pretty rad fact.
Hert’s v8 Hoonigan FC was on pit cruising duty for the day, and he was pretty cool about it as you can see. 🙂
Much thanks goes out to Turbo By Garrett, Global Time Attack, Just Drift, and Drift 101 for a great day of fun and great event. Can’t wait for the next one!
